GHS Implementation in New Zealand

New Zealand is one of the earliest countries that have adopted GHS. New Zealand had adopted a GHS based hazard classification framework in 2001 and had been working on an implementation program since that time. Since July 2006, all hazardous substances had been covered by this GHS-based legislative framework. The table below summarizes the latest status of GHS in New Zealand and the main requirements on SDSs and labels for hazardous chemicals.

Laws & Regulations	HSNO Act; Being amended to align New Zealand's hazard communication with GHS.
Implementation Dates	Substance: July 2006; Mixture: July 2006;
Classification	Use HSNO Classification Criteria(pre-GHS); Correlation between HSNO Classification and GHS classification; CCID: Compulsory HSNO classifications for pure substances;
Labelling and SDSs	GHS-format SDSs and labels are acceptable; HSNO classifications need to be derived and included for the moment;
